So long, King Coal? There’s a new monarch when it comes to America’s main energy source.

For the first time ever, natural gas is now the top source for electric power generation.

Gas overtook coal earlier this spring, reports the AP.

The shift has been in the making for several years, given the drop in gas prices and new regulations that the AP says make coal production more risky.

That could be good news for West Virginia drillers. The federal Energy Information Assocaition says that one-fourth of the country’s natural gas supply comes from West Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania. In 2008, we accounted for only 2.4 percent.
