Aaron Blum is a proud eighth-generation Scots-Irish Appalachian from the mountains of West Virginia. He set out with his camera to photograph what life is really like in these mountains in the series, “Born and Raised.”

You may recognize some of these locations, but Aaron told us the idea is to transcend exact locales. “A big part of the project is me creating my own world of Appalachia, so it’s more of a place that is suspended between reality and stereotypes. Not a documentary.”

All photos were taken inside the geographical area of Appalachia, as defined by the by the Appalachian Regional Commission, however.
