File this under amazing. Here’s a clip of John Denver singing our state anthem, “Take Me Home Country Roads,” with country icon Johnny Cash.

In fact, the song was originally written for Johnny Cash.

The song’s writer, Bill Danoff, told NPR in 2011 the song was written to be sold to Cash. One night Denver was visiting with Danoff and asked what he was working on. Denver heard it and had to have it.

This version probably occurred on one of Denver’s many TV specials. The Encyclopedia of Television lists a special called “John Denver—Thank God I’m a Country Boy” airing on ABC on March 3, 1977 with Cash as one of the guests.
