The state fair is quickly approaching.
It begins Friday and runs through Aug. 19, so that means thousands of folks will soon be in Fairlea.
Organizers decided to open a day earlier than usual. And that’s fitting for the 93rd annual fair.
The Declaration of independence was only 78 years old when farmers and craftsman of fine needlework began displaying their livestock and crafts at it.
The traditions that we treasure have evolved over the years. The state fair gets bigger and better each year.
Here’s a look at ten awesome reasons to find your way to the fairgrounds:
1. Fair food
There is nothing like fair food! Whether you have a hankering for a steak hoagie with the works, chilli cheese fries or a funnel cake smothered in cherries and whipped cream the West Virginia State Fair has you covered.
2. The Carnival Rides
Kids and adults alike will find a wide variety of rides that will have them smiling and screaming with joy.
3. The Entertainment
The West Virginia State Fair always has a top-notch concert lineup. This year’s lineup includes Brantley Gilbert, Aaron Lewis and John Michael Montgomery, just to name a few.
The livestock and agriculture competitions date back to the first state fair held back in in 1854. This tradition is one of the fair’s biggest draws.
5. Car Show
The 4th annual car show is a popular event. It draws antique car lovers from all around West Virginia and beyond.
6. Quilt Show
Quilting is an Appalachian tradition. West Virginia has some very talented quilters, and they are proud to display their creations for others to admire at this special time of year.
After spending the day at the fair you can sleep under the stars at the fair’s campground. After breakfast you can enjoy the fair all over again.
8. Buckin’ B Bullride
The Buckin’ B Bullride brings a western flair to the fair. The bull riders put on an exciting show that will have your heart racing.
9. Bengal Tiger Encounter
Your kids will be thrilled with the majestic Bengal tigers.
10. Harness Races and Draft Horse Pull
Horse lovers will love watching the fast-paced harness races and the draft horse pulls. You can also get an up close look at the horses before and after the shows in the fairground stables.
