Fall is almost here, and it won’t be long before West Virginia’s mountains come alive with stunning fall colors.
West Virginia offers some amazing fall events, but none compare to climbing aboard a train for an up-close look at the beautiful fall foliage.
Here are five train rides that will take you into Wild and Wonderful West Virginia’s glorious mountains this fall.
1. New River Train Excursions
Several day-long leaf peeper trips are available, including Oct. 21-22 and 28-29. Climb aboard and travel through the beautiful New River Gorge, also known as the “Grand Canyon of the East.” You’ll travel along the New River for a close-up look at breathtaking fall colors. The train will travel from Huntington to Hinton giving you a front row seat to some of these most spectacular scenery in the United States.
2. Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad
The Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad is a gateway to one of the country’s most beautiful mountain settings. The trip follows the South Branch of the Potomac River. One particularly scenic gorge known as the Trough is home to the magnificent American bald eagle. Visitors often see them, so be ready to get a picture.
On October 29 the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad has a fall excursion planned. The 1 ½-hour round- trip will take you northbound toward the West Virginia/Maryland state line to the town of Green Spring, WV. The train only makes this trip once a year so don’t miss out!
3. Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
This historic railroad was built in 1901, and was used to haul timber to Cass’ mill. Today the historic train travels to the old logging camp at Whittaker station then on to Bald Knob, which is West Virginia’s third highest point.
On October 28, you can climb aboard the Halloween train for fall colors and seasonal excitement. Wear your Halloween costume and join the fun! The Whittaker station stop will include a hot dog roast, live music, Halloween candy and fun for all!
4. Cheat Lake Salamander
The train is named after the endangered salamander, whose only habitat is the Cheat River. This train takes you through some of our state’s wildest mountain wilderness. You will travel through the forests of the legendary Cheat Mountain and see mountain vistas ablaze with fall colors. This year’s fall excursions will take place Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 21 to Oct. 28.
5. New Tygart Flyer
The New Tygart Flyer takes riders through an “S” curve tunnel, a high bridge and miles of unspoiled mountain views ablaze with fall colors. The vintage diesel-powered locomotives climb along the cascading Shavers Fork to the remote and High Falls of Cheat.
Upcoming fall trips will be offered from Sept. 19 through Oct. 22, Tuesday through Thursday. The train also has fall trips planned on October 26, 27 and 28. Trains depart from Elkins.
