There’s no place like home for the holidays.

What would Christmas be without family, and good food?

But for many people it wouldn’t be the same without some special sausage from DeMary’s Market.

After all, it’s a family tradition.

Ryan DeMary couldn’t be happier about being part of the enterprise.

His family has owned it for decades, and still takes pride in serving loyal fans.

Pete DeMary opened the business July 30,1938.

In the beginning many who shopped there lived in nearby local coal mining communities like Baxter and Grant Town.

The mines are gone, but the popular Marion County grocer remains a landmark.

Customers are more like extended family,

Many folks who now come into the shop at Rivesville are second and third-generation customers.

Just choose a flavor, call to order. Or stop to see what else is in the meat case.

Best to call ahead because it’s all made right there, and sells out fast.

“We usually end up doing a couple thousand pounds before Christmas comes,” he said.

“So it’s not usually good to wait until the last minute when we may be sold out.”

The store will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Traditional offerings include medium hot, extra hot and sweet.

But that’s not all.

Ever try liver sausage?

It’s a mixture of pork liver and shoulder, complete with some fennel seed and crushed red pepper

That’s a special holiday treat for many folks, said owner Richard DeMary.

“We get calls from all around for our sausage. Some plan their trips home to get something from us too,” he said.

One man said his son’s visit from Colorado wouldn’t be complete without it.

Making enough sausage is a lot of work.

“We are here late at night, and here on Sundays even though we’re usually closed then,” he said.

“And it has really picked up over the last few years. We are just getting more and more orders. And that’s a good thing.”

Remember old-time Christmas candy like hard tack and peanut brittle?

Customers find plenty of that too.

Coconut bon bons, bridge mix, chocolate nonpareils, chocolate peanut clusters, gumdrops, orange slices, and chocolate creme drops are popular.
