Bigger isn’t always better. Especially when it comes to some place to visit.
That’s part of the logic behind Canaan Valley’s having been named one of the nation’s premier mountain towns.
Country Living editors included it as part of the magazine’s “16 of the Coziest Small Mountain Towns to Visit This Winter.”
Thousands have seen the article which debuted last month. As a result, the Tucker County community is receiving additional national attention.
Its selection is a milestone, because the competition for the title was stiff.
Other winning places are well-known destinations, including Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and Taos, New Mexico.
Canaan’s snowy climate is a big part of the draw, and the mountains are an added bonus.
“Legend has it that a bunch of snow-starved Washington, D.C. residents overheard airline pilots discussing one mountainside in the region that stayed snowy all winter,” the magazine article reads.
“This eavesdropping lead them on a hunt for the mysterious location, which was Canaan Valley in the Allegheny Mountains.”
Reviewers also raved about the area’s beautiful waterfalls and backcountry trails.
Winter amenities offered at Canaan Valley State Park are a bonus, including seasonal skiing, snow-tubing, sledding and Nordic ski trails.
Tourists can select from a range of lodging accommodations including the resort, hotels and cabin rentals.
Shops and restaurants are scattered through the valley and in nearby Davis.
“Get on top of the slopes and get a load of the 360-degree spectacular panorama of rolling hills.”
